P.S.

So, why are YOU studying a foreign language? Is it a necessity? A pleasure?

        Ciao Daniel

Like Karen, I am completely confused by those ‘conjoining’ words, which often appear to be scattered like confetti over the page.

Part of my confusion is that, so many have different meanings in English, whilst others, to me, appear synonymous.

        Using word reference –
Oltre – beyond , further , farther, in addition to
        Inoltre – furthermore , moreover , also
Magari – if only , also
Invece – instead , on the other hand , but
        But – ma , pero , tranne , invece
        Or – o , oppure

A good example is listening A2/1

“mia nonna era brava a cuccinare …….mio nonno invece passava molto tempo….” (we do not use the also)

One of the many joys of Italian !!!!!

        Ciao a tutti

        John T

6th B2 ( Captcha code wouldnt let me post on the right page)
Another good exercise, the teachers have such lovely diction they help to keep me calm. I do spend far too much time on the computer, that’s how I found your site! Luckily I hate the social networks. Some of the hardest words to remember are adverbs etc and these tapes are really helping to get them familiar. Thanks

Strange you find adverbs hard to remember… Any in particular?

oops, meant conjunctions, pure, nonche, neppure, oppure, bensi, piuttosto, dunque, percio pertanto ebbene, purche, poiche, affinche, seppure, inoltre
        There are such a lot
I think this is one of the problems with my “get the gist ” way of going. i will try to think of a sentence for each as an example to remember, or perhaps try to make up sentences. The more I hear them the better it will get. Quindi and allora seem ubiquitous. As for discourse markers, I had a useful bit of conversation with Paola on a Skype lesson, I was looking for fillers to bide time to avoid that awkward gap, ok now I’m rambling, uffa

OK, now I see what you mean, Karen.

But conjunctions, while there are many, are not so complicated. But add so much to your speech and writing!

I’d see them as a great opportunity, rather than an obstacle…

Also, if you’ve reached the stage to be worrying about whether to use ‘invece’ or ‘tuttavia’, that’s a pretty good sign of the progress you’ve made with the language!

Remember the days when you were trying to get your head around vado, vai, va and so on?

I like this one as usual, but, and its a tiny but, there seems to be a little microphone knock interference from time to time. Never got it before, probably just a blip. you see I am really nit picking here, didn’t spoil the benefit I am getting from these

Yes, I noticed the quality was a bit dodgy. We’re still beginners at this sort of thing, but we’ll get better! Thanks for the feedback.
