It’s nine in the evening in Italy…
Dinner’s been cleared away and there’s an hour or two to while away before bed.
Vegetating in front of the TV is always an easy choice. For the unambitious.
Learning Italian is a better one.
But opening a grammar book at that time of night takes real force of character.
A little human contact would be a lot more fun!
What time is 21.00 Italian time where you are?
Unless you travel a LOT, or run an online business, you’d be forgiven for not knowing your time zones.
Here in Italy we’re at UTC + 1, at least at the moment. It’ll change in the spring… UTC stands for Coordinated Universal Time. The acronym is wrong because it’s all run from Paris, where they say Universal Time Coordinated.
Anyway, if you’re in L.A, California you’ll be in UTC-8 timezone, Denver, Colorado is in UTC-7, Houston, Texas in UTC-6, New York City (and state) in UTC-5, and so on.
Even if you’re as slow as I am with these things, you’ll see that the further west you are from Paris, the more behind you get, so L.A. is still in bed while New York is having breakfast and Paris is off to the brasserie for a chic but slimming lunch.
(My children tell me that this is because the world turns in an easterly direction, so countries further east get to see the sun earlier and so are further ‘ahead’ in the day.)
Anyway, back to the math. If Rome is UTC+1, and L.A. is UTC-8, then the difference is 9 hours. Which means that 21.00 / 9 pm in Italy is 12 pm in L.A., 1 pm in Denver, 2 pm in Houston, 3 pm in New York City, and so on.
There’s an incredibly helpful time zone map here, which you can use to work out what time 21.00 in Italy is where you are.
Announcing the Tuesday evening conversation group!
Paolo and a maximum of just FIVE students will be meeting for an hour of conversation each Tuesday evening at 21.00 Italian time. Starting on March 11th, assuming we sell at least two places (the minimum needed to cover the cost of the teacher).
Join them. Practice your Italian and make friends from around the world! You’ll find full details here: Tuesday Italian conversation class
Just one place left in the Wednesday 14.00 group!
What about the Wednesday conversation class we announced a day or two ago? Well, four of the five places have already been snapped up!
There’s room for one more student! Classes start on Wednesday 12th March at 14.00 Italian time (what time is THAT in L.A.??)
What about ‘down under’?
Yes, yes, we haven’t forgotten you. There’s still the possibility of a very-early-in-the-morning-Italian-time conversation class which should be just bonza for Aussies… But this is a new project, so we’re taking it cautiously (and there are a lot more Americans….)
Watch this space for info. about the final, ‘Australian’ class!

Thanks for thinking of us here ‘down under’ Daniel. So, we shall wait and see. In the meantime, Dianne and I are doing a practice session once a week even if I (more than her) get into a muddle here and there! It is heaps of fun. So if any other Australians (or near neighbours) would be interested in doing some practice Italian conversation, my email address is: dancingirl@icloud.com. Thanks again Daniel. A presto! Jo : )

That’s a great initiative, Jo. I wish you well with it!
