OnlineItalianClub.com has ‘members’ all around the globe.
An average of a thousand people a day use our site to learn Italian, and you’re spread all the way around the globe!
Think of the planet, spinning on its slightly wonky axis, and imagine other people like you who are learning Italian.
Where might they be?
Oh look, here comes Sydney, Australia (more or less the furthest east this article will get), where it’s now around nine o’clock on Friday morning. And, of course, the sun is shining, too.
Track your eyes back eastwards and it soon gets dark (as the sun is now around the other side…)
Keep going through the dark bit, all the way across the Indian Ocean, and eventually you’ll be able to make out the lights of Cape Town, South Africa.
It’s right down there at the bottom of the Africa, do you see? It’s about one in the morning in Cape Town.
It always surprises me to hear that Cape Town is just one hour ahead of Bologna, Italy (where I wrote this earlier and am now fast asleep in my bed.)
That’s because time zones go east-west, not north-south. You probably knew that already…
Anyway, keep looking eastwards, but diagonally this time, and up there, across the Atlantic Ocean, you’ll come to Washington D.C. on the east coast of the United States, where it’s still just six o’clock on Thursday evening.
Now go left some more, horizontally across the continent to San Francisco, on the Pacific Ocean. It’s three hours earlier there.
And finally, we go diagonally once more until we arrive in Anchorage, Alaska. Someone from there bought an e-book just the other day… Where they are, it’s just 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon (and probably very cold and snowy.)
So, here’s a suggestion. Why don’t you guys learning Italian in Sydney, Australia, shout out ‘Ciao’ to fellow club members all the way around the other side of our planet, in Anchorage, Alaska?
You’re seven thousand, three hundred and forty-five miles apart, by the way. And the quickest route takes you up and over the pole, not the way I just described it here.
Anyway, all this is to remind you that the January Sale 2016, which ends at midnight on Jan. 6th,
is probably still going when you read this.
Even though it’s midnight where I am, and tomorrow for you guys down under, it’s still yesterday for another ten hours in Alaska.
So, if you thought you’d missed the deadline, you’re in luck!
It’s still possible to pick up online Italian lessons and e-books at a discount. Use coupon code januarysale2016.
OK, then, the plan is this:
I wake up in the morning and answer any last minute ‘customer service’ type e-mails. Then, at about eleven a.m. Italian time, I press the button to invalidate the coupon code. That’ll be at midnight in Anchorage, nine in the evening in Sydney.
If I mixed up any of my time-zones, please don’t bother to write to tell me. However, if anyone’s having problems using the coupon code, or has any questions about anything in the shop, do drop me an e-mail.
You can be sure I’ll do my best to sort out whatever your problem is before midnight in Anchorage!
For example, this one from Joan, who wrote to me earlier today/yesterday:
I want to sign up under the discounted amount for ten lessons. When I try to sign on I keep getting 150 euro as the price and I do not want to agree to that amount but to the discounted amount. Please help me so I can do this within today.
In case you’ve been having similar issues, this is my reply to her:
