My family migrated to Australia in 1955 from Gorizia. I only did first class in Italy before leaving. Since my parents have passed away my Italian has been slowly forgotten and I struggle to converse fluently, although I manage quite well in the simple form and make myself understood. It was not fashionable to speak Italian when we arrived as we were the ‘wogs’ and discriminated against at school. Now it has become fashionable to speak another language and ‘all things Italian’ are loved by Aussies. I would have loved to have written this in my Mother Tongue but that is the reason I enjoy Madrelingua so I can learn the grammar and read your stories.
PS. I have joined an Italian Community of Assistance, Co.As.It as a volunteer so I can visit the elderly at home and converse in Italian
