It’s Epiphany today, a national holiday here in Italy.
Last night a witch named Befana flew past our house on her broomstick to leave candies for the kids who’d been good.
And lumps of coal for the naughty ones.
Hah! That’ll teach ’em.
(You can read all about this Epiphany tradition on Wikipedia, here.)
Completely unseasonal then, is today’s Italian dialogue with transcript, as we’re at the gelateria (ice-cream shop).
That said, Italian gelaterie seem to do good business all year round, not just in summer.
For example, it’s common if you are invited to dinner at someone’s house to take a kilo or so of ice-cream with you. It costs, but it’s delicious, and is sure to be appreciated!
