Italian Vocabulary: Describing Appearance (1)

In this lesson you will learn some Italian words for describing people’s appearance:

aspetto – appearance

gli occhi – eyes
gli occhiali – glasses

castani – brown
blu – blue
azzurri – sky-blue
verdi – green
neri – black
grigi – grey

il naso – nose
piccolo- small
a patata – flat nose
alla francese – snub nose
pulito – neat
grande – big

il sorriso – smile

le orecchie – ears
gli orecchini – earings

i capelli – hair (note that this is plural for Italians, “You have beautiful hairs!”)
scuri – dark
chiari – bright
castani – brown
biondi – blond
neri – black

lunghi – long
corti – short
rossi – red
mossi – wavy
lisci – straight
ricci – curly

calvo – bald
rasato – shaved

la barba – beard
i baffi – moustache

alto – tall
basso – short
grasso – fat
magro – thin

STUDY TIP

Write a description of yourself using these verbs and the vocabulary from this lesson:

HO / NON HO
Ho la barba, ho i capelli scuri, non ho gli orecchini…

SONO / NON SONO
Non sono alto, sono magro…

Then try describing someone else you know (don’t forget to conjugate the verb to the third person, so ho > ha, sono > è and so on.)

Mia moglie è alta, ha capelli ricci.
