Even though it’s New Year’s Day, it’s still Friday.
So here we are with a new Italian Conversation for you!
We’re still shopping, but this time at the bookshop. Here’s the link: Shopping, Libreria
Or check out all thirty-eight of our free Italian dialogues + transcripts on the Italian Conversations homepage.
They’re there for you to read and listen to as often as you wish, completely free of charge.
Elsewhere on the site you’ll find over a thousand pages of other free material for learning Italian.
They’re also free.
Oh, and you don’t need to register, log-in or remember a password to use them.
Wise Words
Seth Godin’s post today contained some wise words that I thought were very applicable to learning foreign languages.
The post is about ‘Expectations’ and how you can modify yours. I’ve picked out two lines for you:
Lower the expectations that you’ll find an easy way out.
Raise your expectations for how much consistent daily action can transform your status quo.
(Read his full article here.)
Languages are codes for communicating.
You learn a foreign language when you use it to communicate with others who share the code.
If you don’t live in a community where that language is spoken, you can still participate through electronic media (TV, Internet, etc.) or by reading.
Admittedly, it’s hard at first. But it does get easier.
And the more you use the language code, the easier it gets for you to encode the meaning you want to transmit, and to decode the meanings received from others.
Given that we’re talking about massively complex systems, it’s true: there’s no ‘easy way’ to learn a foreign language.
But ‘consistent daily action’ will make a huge difference to your confidence and ability.
