Verbs – Parlare (To Speak, to Talk)

Grammar

(io) parlo (I speak)
(tu) parli (you speak)
(lui/lei) parla (he/she speaks)
(noi) parliamo (we speak)
(voi) parlate (you speak)
(loro) parlano (they speak)

Examples of Use

Parlo un po’ d’italiano.
(I speak a little Italian.)
Parlano tante lingue.
(They speak a lot of languages.)
Luisa parla al telefono con sua sorella.
(Luisa is speaking on the phone with her sister.)
Mio marito parla tanto!
(My husband talks a lot!)
Sono una persona molto socievole. Parlo con tutti.
(I’m a very sociable person. I talk to anybody.)
Non parla mai con nessuno.
(He never talks to anybody.)

Idiomatic Expressions

parlare a vanvera
(to talk nonsense, to babble, to talk gibberish)
Troppa gente parla a vanvera.
(Too many people talk nonsense.)
È solo un vecchio che parla a vanvera.
(He is just an old man talking gibberish.)
Smettila di parlare a vanvera e dimmi quello che devo fare!
(Stop talking nonsense and tell me what I have to do!)

parlare alle spalle
(to talk behind someone’s back)
Non è bello parlare alle spalle della gente.
(It’s not nice to talk behind people’s backs.)
Non mi piace quando mi parlano alle spalle.
(I don’t like it when they talk behind my back.)
Cercate di evitare le persone che parlano alle spalle.
(Try to avoid people who talk behind your back.)

parlare al muro
(like talking to a brick wall)
Parlare a Federico è come parlare al muro.
(Talking to Federico is like talking to a brick wall.)
