La forma impersonale con essere – Impersonal form with verb ‘essere’

You have already learned at the beginner levelhow to build the passive form of a sentence by using the ‘impersonal’ pronoun si. Click here if you want to go back to the lesson on ‘si impersonale’.

This construction is another strategy to achieve an ‘impersonal’ effect: it is used in Italian in order to avoid stating a specific subject and be less direct. It is very simple to build:

si + 3rd singular person of “essere”

 

Take a look at these examples:

 

– Se si è amici ci si dovrebbe aiutare.

– Se si è nervosi è meglio non bere tropo caffè.

– Se si è colleghi spesso nasce la competitività.

– Quando si è troppo stanchi si dorme male.
