Italian Grammar Lessons: Possessive Adjectives

On this page you’ll find a brief summary of Italian possessive adjectives.

Italian adjectives need to be conjugated according to the gender and number of the noun they refer to. Possessive adjectives are just the same.

Take a look at the table below:

io

tu

lui/lei/Lei

noi

voi

loro

(il) mio

(il) tuo

(il) suo

(il) nostro

(il) vostro

il loro

(la) mia

(la) tua

(la) sua

(la) nostra

(la) vostra

la loro

i miei

i tuoi

i suoi

le mie

le tue

le sue

le nostre

le vostre

le loro

Always put an article before the possessive adjective. For example: il mio cane = my dog, le mie scarpe = my shoes, un mio amico = my friend.

The exception to this rule is when possessive adjectives are used with singular family nouns such as sorella – sister, marito – husband, zia – aunt, nonno – grandfather and so on. In this case no article is used. For example:

Singular: mia sorella, mio zio, mio nonno, mia cugina
Plural: le mie sorelle, i miei zii, i miei nonni, le mie cugine

And the exception to THAT rule is that before the possessive adjective loro, there is ALWAYS an article. For example:

Marco e Fabio sono fratelli: il loro padre è francese, la loro madre è italiana.
