Types of people

On this page you can read a list of words to describe some characteristic of people. Note that, exception made for ‘conte’, all words presented below are adjectives, here used as nouns.

il nobile [nobleman]

il conte [count]

il / la casinista [rowdy person / messy person]

la / il disfattista [defeatist]

il distratto [scatterbrain]

il muto [dumb person]

il sordo [deaf person]

il cieco [blind person]

lo spilorcio [penny-pincher]

lo spendaccione [spendthrift]

Finally, these two words:

il polentone [person from northern Italy]

il terrone [person from southern Italy]

Please note that these terms are considered offensive by many people. A person from southern Italy is better called ‘meridionale’ and someone from the north is reffered to as ‘settentrionale’. Still, the terms ‘terrone’ and ‘polentone’ are often used in colloquial Italian, not necessarily with a pejorative meaning.
