Italian Vocabulary: Professions (2)

In this lesson you’ll find more Italian words to learn for jobs and professions.

But also a good chance to study suffixes. A suffix added at the end of a “root” word to convert it into another, related word.

For example in English: teach + er = teacher

While memorising this list, can you identify the “root word” and the suffix?

And how many suffixes can you find that are repeated at least once?

il panettiere – baker (“root word” = pane, suffix = iere)
Il barbiere / la parrucchiera – barber / hairdresser
il giornalaio – newsagent
il giornalista – journalist
il tabaccaio – tobacconist
il meccanico – mechanician
l’elettricista – electrician
il medico – doctor
il veterinario – vet
il muratore – bricklayer
il fruttivendolo – greengrocer
il contadino – farmer
il libraio – bookseller
il macellaio – butcher
il falegname – carpenter
il pescivendolo – fishmonger
il gioielliere – jeweler
