“aria fritta”

literally ‘fried air’, hot air, smoke and mirrors

Se si conoscono veramente bene le regole del marketing, è facile vendere aria fritta.
(If you know the rules of marketing really well, it’s easy to sell smoke and mirrors.)

(People want concrete actions from politicians, not hot air.)

“avere l’aria di”

literally ‘to have the air of’, to seem

Per me ha l’aria di essere un bravo avvocato. Mi sembra molto preparato.
(To me he seems to be a good lawyer. He appears very well-prepared.)
Quando è arrivato alla festa, avevano tutti l’aria di divertirsi molto.
(When he arrived at the party, everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves a lot.)

“buttare/mandare all’aria”

to upend, to throw away

La polizia ha perquisito la stanza, ha buttato tutto all’aria e non ha trovato nulla che potesse aiutarla nelle indagini.
(The police searched the room, they upended everything and found nothing that could help them in the investigation.)
Non puoi buttare all’aria dieci anni di matrimonio così!
(You can’t throw away ten years of marriage like that!)

“darsi delle arie”

to give oneself airs

Tua sorella si dà tante arie ma è proprio un incompetente. Ogni progetto che ha iniziato è fallito.
Your sister gives herself so many airs but is really incompetent. Every project she’s started has failed.

Nonostante abbia vinto molte medaglie, non si dà molte arie. È una persona semplice e modesta.
Although he won many medals, he doesn’t give himself airs. He’s a simple and modest person.

“cambiare aria”

to have a change of air

Dopo tutto quello che è successo, hanno voluto cambiar aria e si sono trasferiti. Non li posso biasimare.
(After all that happened, they wanted a change of air and moved. I cannot blame them.)
Per tutto il tempo che sono stato a casa loro non hanno fatto che litigare. Ad un certo punto ho pensato che fosse meglio cambiare aria e me ne sono andato.
