“Is it possible to learn Italian without ever spending a cent?”
Sure.
I’ve been teaching myself Italian for at least 16 years.
There are masses of free materials for learning Italian available on our site, and on others like it.
These days there are even websites where you can exchange language practice with an Italian native speaker who wants to learn your language.
Not to mention Italian TV channels, radio stations and newspapers available online for free.
Along with the Italian dictionaries you’ll need to decipher them.
So, yes, absolutely you can learn Italian for free.
But that doesn’t mean it’s such a great idea…
Could a Mr. Miyagi make you a champion at Italian?
This week I’ve been teaching English to a group of Italian middle school kids.
Their attention span is rather limited, and the lesson is long, so we’ve been spending the last fifteen minutes of each class watching ‘The Karate Kid’.
Daniel Russo is getting bullied at his new high school, so tries to teach himself karate from a book.
It’s slow and frustrating: the book doesn’t deliver the results he hoped for.
Increasingly desperate (and bruised), Daniel begs the Japanese janitor of his building, Mr. Miyagi, to teach him to defend himself.
From that moment on, it’s just a question of discipline and time.
Mr. Miyagi knows from experience what will work to help Daniel learn.
He prepares the most helpful practice activities, in the right sequence.
He gives expert feedback, and his friendship and support allow his student to stay motivated.
After two months of hard-work, Daniel is ready to compete in the All-Valley Karate Tournament.
Will he get beaten up again?
Hire the movie to find out (or look it up on Wikipedia.)
How to learn better and faster
It’s improbable that the janitor of your building would be able to teach you Italian.
But if, like Daniel, you struggle to learn alone, why not seek out a black-belt Italian teacher for some pro-tips, encouragement, and practice?
With the right help you might make better learning decisions, so waste less time and get results faster.
