Italian Grammar Lessons: Relative Pronouns – Che

‘Che’ is probably one of the most frequently-used Italian words.

It has at least three different functions. It can be used:

– as an interrogative adjective or pronoun, meaning ‘what’ or ‘which’. For example:

Che stai facendo?
Che autobus aspetti?

– as a conjunction, meaning ‘that’. For example:

Io penso che dobbiamo fare la spesa.
Ho creduto che fossi andato a vivere all’estero.

– as a relative pronoun, in which case it has a double function – it substitutes the subject or direct object while connecting two sentences. For example:

Ho conosciuto un ragazzo che suona la chitarra.
Ho restituito il libro che avevo preso in prestito in biblioteca.
