Italian Grammar Lessons: Direct Pronouns In The Past Tense

Another complication with the Italian past tense arises when using direct pronouns.

In the same way as the past participle of past tense verbs with the ‘essere’ auxiliary need to agree (singular, plural, masculine, feminine) with the subject, so too do verbs used with a direct pronoun, even if the auxiliary verb is ‘avere’.

Here are some examples. Notice how the past participle changes its ending when the pronoun is used:

Ho comprato una maglia nel negozio sotto casa.
Quanto l’hai pagata?

Ho parcheggiato la macchina vicino al cancello della scuola
Io l’ho parcheggiata lontano

Ho comprato i biglietti per lo spettacolo di domani sera. E tu?
Anche io li ho comprati

Ho incontrato Lisa e Sara al parco. E tu?
Io non le ho viste.

Hai prenotato il tavolo al ristorante?
Si, l’ho già prenotato.

Hai già restituito le videocassette a Paolo?
No, non le ho ancora restituite.
